There’s a certain magic that comes with attending your first live concept car release, especially at an event as electrifying as the SEMA Show. As an automotive enthusiast, I’ve watched countless unveilings online, but being there in person, in the bustling, high-energy atmosphere of SEMA, was a whole different experience. Standing among journalists, influencers, and car fans, I felt the anticipation in the air as Kia unveiled two new concept cars: the EV9 ADVNTR and PV5 WKNDR. Both vehicles are stunning examples of Kia’s vision for a future where capability, adaptability, and sustainability are at the core of vehicle design. Kia’s approach to SEMA this year was fascinating. With each concept car crafted to cater to different lifestyles, Kia managed to embody both the adventurous spirit and the practicality that today’s drivers crave. Let’s dive into the details of these two unique concepts and see what makes them so special.
EV9 ADVNTR Concept: Taking Electric SUVs to New Heights
The first of Kia’s concept cars to make its debut at SEMA was the EV9 ADVNTR Concept. This all-electric, three-row SUV is an evolution of Kia’s EV9, a model designed to provide spacious, zero-emission driving for families. However, the ADVNTR concept takes that base and pushes it into rugged, off-road territory, emphasizing the adventurous potential of electric SUVs.

One of the standout features of the EV9 ADVNTR is its increased ground clearance. A custom 3-inch lift gives it an imposing stance and allows for better off-road capabilities, complemented by the aggressive wheel and tire combination that promises to handle rough terrain. This isn’t just a vehicle for urban commutes; it’s built to explore paths less traveled. With custom front and rear fascias, the ADVNTR radiates a bold, rugged look that sets it apart from the standard EV9, adding reinforced rocker panels that enhance durability for off-road ventures.
Another notable feature is the custom roof rack, designed to handle everything from standard luggage to roof-mounted tents. This addition transforms the EV9 ADVNTR into a vehicle that’s ready for multi-day camping trips or weekend escapes. Kia clearly envisioned this SUV for the kind of driver who loves the outdoors but doesn’t want to compromise on luxury and technology. It’s the ultimate blend of eco-friendly engineering with go-anywhere capability, redefining what we think of when we envision an electric adventure vehicle.
PV5 WKNDR Concept: The “Swiss Army Knife” of EV Vans
The second concept Kia unveiled was the PV5 WKNDR Concept, a van based on Kia’s line of PBVs (Purpose Beyond Vehicles) designed with versatility in mind. This isn’t your typical van; it’s been reimagined as a fully capable, off-grid escape pod, tailor-made for those who prioritize flexibility and adaptability in their travels. Just by looking at it, you can tell it’s built for function without sacrificing form.

The PV5 WKNDR is equipped with off-road tires and a lifted suspension, giving it a commanding presence and capability for navigating rougher trails. But it’s the modular interior that truly steals the show. The cabin is designed to be flexible and adaptable, making it easy to customize for any adventure. It’s like a “Swiss Army Knife on wheels” according to Kia with everything optimized for space and functionality. The interior can be reconfigured for a range of uses, from a compact living space to an efficient workspace, catering to the modern, mobile lifestyle thanks to its B-Pillar-less design.
One of the PV5 WKNDR’s most innovative features is the “Gear Head,” a first-of-its-kind storage solution that provides off-board, sheltered storage when the van is stationary. This setup allows you to access gear without taking up valuable interior space, which is especially useful for camping or outdoor activities. The Gear Head can even transform into a mobile pantry, offering a unique “Cook with a View” setup for culinary enthusiasts who want to whip up meals surrounded by nature. However, the highlights for me were the LED digital readout on the front displaying crucial information about the winch including tension strength in LBS and an on/off position light. Both of these would be more than welcome if you were actually using the winch out in the wilderness. Although this concept probably never will, its cool to see innovative stuff.
Kia didn’t stop there—the PV5 WKNDR is designed for complete self-sufficiency. Solar panels and hydro turbine wheels help recharge the battery, making it a viable option for extended, off-grid adventures. While there are not a lot of details on how these wheels actually work, Kia assures that they can make a sizable contribution to its charge. Additionally, an onboard compressor provides everything from trail-ready tire adjustments to inflating mattresses, emphasizing the WKNDR’s role as a fully equipped, self-contained escape vehicle. Pretty much anything you’d need out on the trail, the WKNDR has in spades. Too bad you really wont be able to buy one.

Kia’s Vision for the Future of Adventure Vehicles
Being at my first live car reveal and seeing these concepts up close was an unforgettable experience. The EV9 ADVNTR and PV5 WKNDR concepts are more than just prototypes; they represent a clear vision of Kia’s commitment to innovation and lifestyle-centric design. By creating vehicles that cater to both the thrill-seekers and the mobile adventurers, Kia is taking significant strides in aligning their products with the evolving needs of modern drivers.
What I appreciated most was Kia’s focus on sustainability, with both vehicles incorporating features designed to minimize environmental impact while maximizing versatility. In a time where automotive brands are racing to go electric, Kia stands out by ensuring their concepts are not only eco-friendly but also capable of fulfilling specific lifestyle needs. From the adventurous spirit of the ADVNTR to the adaptability of the WKNDR, Kia showcased that electric vehicles can be more than just efficient—they can be bold, practical, and tailored to unique experiences.
As I left the Kia booth at SEMA, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the direction they’re heading. These concept cars might be just the beginning, but they speak to a future where vehicles are more than modes of transportation—they’re tools for adventure, tailored to the lives we aspire to live. I can’t wait to see if these concepts make it to production, and if they do, they’ll undoubtedly leave a mark on the automotive landscape. In the meantime, I’ll hold on to the memory of my first live press car release and the excitement of seeing these bold concepts unveiled. If you’re a fan of adventure, sustainability, and innovative design, keep an eye on Kia. Their future looks bright.
